Co-op America Releases New Solar Energy Report

The Utility Solar Assessment (USA) Report produced by Co-op America and clean-tech research firm, Clean Edge makes the case for solar energy as a “cost-effective hedge against fossil fuels,” and asserts that the cost of solar will be on par with retail-electricity rates within the next decade.

The study outlines strategies for utilities, solar companies, and regulators to reach 10% solar in the United States by 2025. The study has gotten lots of media—from CNBC and Fortune to local papers like The Baltimore Sun and blogs like The Huffington Post. The report is also getting wide distribution to the target audience—utilities, policy makers and regulators. One of our solar allies made copies and delivered them to all the commissioners and their staff at the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission. Another ally delivered it to the members of the House and Senate energy committees.

Co-op America’s Solar Catalyst Group works to harness market forces to lower the price and accelerate the growth and development of solar energy around the world.

Our Business Leaders Protest Coal-fired Power Plant

Green Business Network™ leaders across Virginia released a statement urging Virginia Governor Tim Kaine and Dominion Power CEO Thomas Farrell to cancel plans to build a coal-fired power plant in Wise County. A joint letter from the 20 businesses read, “The future of business in the state is dependent on a cleaner, greener and competitive economy in Virginia. Instead of investing in coal, we should be putting our money behind renewable energy projects and creating green jobs.” According to the Virginia State Corporation Commission, the coal plant would cause a loss of 1,476 Virginia jobs. Green Business Network Director Denise Hamler said, “Investing in coal is bad business and it is time for Governor Kaine to cancel his support of this plant and instead make a serious investment in Virginia’s renewable energy economy.”
